When in Doubt: Ignore!

Now that I'm out of the classroom and working as a behavior therapist, I'm able to utilize something I've always been good at: ignoring.  It's in my job description to ignore.  Never thought that would happen!

A kid is throwing a fit?  Ignore.

Now they're waving their hands in your face?  Ignore.

And then they start banging a toy on the table?  Ignore.

I do a pretty decent amount of ignoring every day.  And the fits and noises and banging of toys are easy to ignore.  But let me tell you what's NOT easy to ignore: hilarious repetitive questions and statements.  One of my new friends frequently engages in repetitive questions and statements.  A lot.  And they typically require me to turn my head for a second while I regain composure.  On Friday we were working and all of a sudden he blurted out, "Friskies Seafood Sensations.  Feed the Senses."  And he said it just the same as the commercial.  And I had to turn away.  And then he repeated it 6 more times.  And I had to turn away.  Six. More. Times.  Here's a snippet of the commercial, just in case you want the full effect.

Can you imagine having to ignore that?  It was hard!  I'm getting better at the whole no smiling or laughing thing. But I still have some work to do.

What's the funniest thing you've had to ignore in your classroom?  Or the funniest thing you should have ignored, but couldn't control your laughter?

Oooh I'm laughing at this! Kids are so funny! I can't think of one specific time right now but I've had repetitive students as well. It's hard to ignore but since like you said teachers have to ignore in many situations I did. :)

It's definitely something you have to get used to-but if you addressed every little thing you wouldn't get any teaching in! That it was a cat food commercial is just too funny!

Oh gosh, so many things should I have ignored.

I had one little guy who liked to bark. If I walked by his desk and bumped it with my hip, he shouted, "SEE WHAT YOU DO?!"

I've had the ordinary whistlers. I've had the I'm going to try to toss this into the trash from far away, over and over. Every time I miss, I'll go get it and walk away to try again. I've had the kids who hum and sing purposefully to bother someone else (usually not me; it's usually to bother another kid. And they are NOT good at ignoring!)

I had a barker, too! Thought it was hilarious.

I also had a kid last year that REFUSED to be ignored. He'd stand in front of you with his hands on his hips, huffing, and say, "I'm angry!" I had to stifle back many laughs.

Funniest story:
ME: Does anyone think they know what will happen if we swallow a seed?
KIDS: Nothing! We are humans!
ME: So we can't grow plants inside of us?
KIDS: NOOOOO!
ME: That's right. We would need sunlight, water and fresh air inside of our stomachs.
KIDS: Yeah and soil.
HILARIOUS STUDENT: I have all of those things, I can just open my mouth.
ME: But what about soil?
HILARIOUS STUDENT: Well... I have poop! That could work.
ME: hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Oh, how I love kindergarten!

Oh my goodness! This is hysterical! There are so many funny stories out there. I had a chuckle daily. I have a bathroom in my classroom. For some reason, over the years, I have had a couple of students who don't realize that we can hear them in the bathroom when they sing lol! It echoes in there and the kids will belt out a tune. What really cracks me up is the remainder of the class smiles, chuckles, and giggles when the kids sing, bu when they come out of the bathroom there faces turn stone straight. At which point it is hard for me not to laugh! Oh they make us smile every day.
By the way, I am a new follower.

Hi, I teach pre-k and my preschoolers are not allowed to bring toys to school because of the distractions. Well, this year it was a week or so after the Christmas break and they were bugging me to allow them to bring in toys...so I said ok...tomorrow you can bring in a Christmas toy. I sent a little note home. The next day, everyone was smiling all over the place, happy to show off a new toy. Stephnaie, a little girl in my room was sad, I asked her why and she said my daddy said "no toys in school." I guess he nor mommy had a chance to read the note i sent home the night before, so I told her she could bring one another day. We gathered on the rug later that day to share our thoughts and toys in round robin style, when we came upon Stephanie she stood up and said, "MY DAM DAD WOULDN'T LET ME BRING A DAM TOY TO SCHOOL TODAY" all the while, her fist was waving in the air...my assistant ran out of the room laughing and I had to, as you say, "turn my head". Needless to say, dad was pretty embarrassed.

Moving from 5th grade to 2nd grade last year taught me that I had to ignore more than I recently had to. By the end of the year the students were a little better because they knew they would not get attention for negative behaviors.I’m your newest follower. Please check out my blog if you get a chance.
