Making Sense of Numbers

Any Math in Focus users out there?  My district adopted the series last year and after having a year to make sense of it, I'm starting to catch on and really enjoy the series.  It took some getting used to because the Singapore strategies definitely make you think about math in a different way.  But now I have a better idea of what I need to do to give my kiddos what they need to be successful in the series.

The series is VERY heavy on number sense.  Which is great, but the beginning of the first grade series is WAY too simple for my current first graders, so I've been coming up with different ideas to teach the content but challenge them a bit.  I decided to try to play more games instead of just having them breeze through the workbook pages and call it a day.

When I teach fact families, I always play a game where I give each child a math problem and they have to go find their family.  Well, I decided to take the different representations of numbers (ten frame, standard form, word form, and number bond) and have them find the other representations of the number on their card.  They LOVED playing this and it was a great way for us to review numbers to 10 without me boring them to death!

We've started Envisions math is which has Singapore influence. Just curious...what grade levels do you use these for?

Thanks guys! Right now I'm just using them with 1st grade. Once I've taught number words to K, I'll use the numeral, number word, and ten frame cards with them. Towards the end of the year I can throw in number bonds with K.

HI! I think you just joined my blog. THANK YOU! I've joined yours. Thanks for the math sheet and good luck with your college teaching. I've thought of doing that -- got my masters a few years ago -- but basically I'm a chicken. So I'll be looking forward to reading about your experiences with that!

These are awesome! Thank you so much for sharing. I use a math program called Right Start (similar to Singapore). I can't wait to pull these out and use them with my kids.
